Raisin’ Cain: The Wild And Raucous Story of Johnny Winter is a raucous roller coaster of a story detailing the iconic axe-man’s life from his early years through more than four decades as one of the world’s most legendary blues rock guitarists.
Winter and an array of musicians, family and friends provided hundreds of hours of candid, no-holds-barred interviews documenting the highs and lows of his extraordinary life, from toughing it out in Texas, to his appearance at Woodstock, his affair with Janis Joplin, stadium-filling tours, a devastating fall into heroin addiction, and his triumphant road back to stardom.
The book paints an intimate portrait of both the man and the musician and includes more than 56 photographs, many from Johnny’s personal collection,
Of the book Winter says: “It has everything. All the things that I wanted people to know, from how hard it was growing up in Texas being an albino, my career, the early days, my problems with drugs…it’s very realistic and exactly what happened.”
In fact, Winter’s story continues to unfold. His most recent CD, Johnny Winter Live Bootleg Series Vol. 6 (Friday Music), released in January, debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Blues Chart, where it remains.
Winter, who is great health, continues to tour extensively, both in the U.S. and internationally, and his own Screamin’ Demon hot sauce is now available.
Other recent releases include: The Johnny Winter Anthology (double CD), Johnny Winter Live Bootleg Series Vol. 5, Johnny Winter the Woodstock Experience and the Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director’s Cut 40th anniversary DVD, with never before seen footage of Winter’s performance at the historic festival, all issued in 2009, as well as Live Through The ‘70s, the first in a three-part DVD series with editions covering the 1980s and 1990s still to come.
Also of note is Gibson Custom Shop’s unveiling of its Johnny Winter Signature Firebird V guitar, modeled after the guitarist’s treasured 1963 ‘Bird. It became the fastest-selling guitar in the company’s history and was celebrated with a special performance by Johnny, Slash and Larry Carlton for its induction ceremonies at Gibson’s Nashville headquarters.
In 2007 Winter joined Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Derek Trucks and a host of others at Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, which can be seen on the Emmy-winning DVD as well as special guest appearances onstage at the Allman brothers 40th anniversary jam in NYC and the famed Warren Hayes X-mas Jam.
Rolling Stone magazine has called Johnny Winter one of the greatest guitar players of all time. A legend and an icon, Johnny has jammed with guitar heavies Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Dickey Betts, Rick Derringer and Duane Allman, and paved the way for fellow Texas superstars Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top.
